Teenshop, Inc., was originally founded to help girls of color reach their full potential and avoid the common pitfalls that can prevent them from reaching their dreams. The nonprofit organization was begun in 1985 in Philadelphia by award-winning journalist and educator Elleanor Jean Hendley to help girls become leaders and agents of change in their communities. By encouraging them to set goals, such as attending college, Teenshop helps girls from underserved areas find ways to achieve a better life.
Teenshop’s success over the last 35 years in empowering girls of color has led to support from two of the country’s largest company foundations, those of Coca-Cola and Comcast.
